Writing is one of indirect communication
activities where people can convey feelings, ideas, expression, and
sharing something to another. Writing is one of the four skills in
language learning besides listening, speaking, and reading. In writing
activity, the writer must learn how to communicate his or her ideas, in
order to make the readers understanding what is told about. Writing
activity is one of difficult subjects for the student in a language
class. Moreover, writing is a complex skill which needs the writer’s
thoughts and opinions, this skill also requires other elements in
writing, such as grammar, vocabulary, spelling and punctuation. In
connection with those elements of writing, grammar and vocabulary are
both of important and give influences in written form and are also
needed because the students has to choose and arrange words to make a
good sentences. In addition, spelling and punctuation must be considered
to write a good written form that is appropriate with the context.
Furthermore, based on the writer’s experience on teaching practice, most students
still have difficulties in writing. The difficulties are; first, the
student had low motivation to learn writing because the teacher gives
less pay attention for the student. Then, the students have lack
vocabulary, and less writing. Second, the students had difficulties to
recognize the words and they also had limited vocabulary, so that they
did not know what they could write and how to write it. Third, the
student had difficulties to expose their ideas into paper. Finally, the
student had difficulties to select, combine, arrange and develop ideas
to be good sentences and paragraph in the paper.
Consist of the
problems above that faced by the students there are several cause of
problem that come from the teacher and teacher’s strategy that they use
not appropriate with the material at the time. Such as teacher didn’t
more pay attend to the students while they taught in teaching writing
activity, it means that teacher ignore students to write well, they
don’t give more contribution to make a good writing. Then, they just
give the exercise to write a sentence with no more explanation. After
that, the teacher use less comfortable strategy in writing activity
Based
on the phenomena above, the students have difficulties in writing. It
is necessary for the teacher to find out the appropriate strategy in
order to help the students in writing. A good writing strategy is a
strategy that can help the students to expose their idea well. To do
that the teacher can lead the students by asking some questions.
Therefore, the students will be easy extend their idea or write a good
writing product.
Thus although,
there are some strategies that can be used in teaching writing; first,
Learning Admit Slip Strategy, it is very short pieces of writing that
teacher collect at the door at the beginning of class. Second, Logs
Strategy, it is a way to integrate more extended informal reflective
writing and curriculum. Third, Journalist Questions strategy, it is a
strategy to lead students in finishing writing product through some
questions. It helps students organize their knowledge and bring it to
writing process. Last strategy is GIST Strategy; it is an effective
summarize and review strategy. GIST used to provide an opportunity in
assessing student to finish their writing process.
